Included some old favorites and new discoveries in this playlist! It’s in the 90s today in Los Angeles, so trying to pretend it’s fall feels a bit like grasping at straws. I did buy some canned pumpkin, and managed to dig out my Mukluk slippers from storage, just in case California decides to cool down. Happy Birthday to me

It’s my birthday today!

I have not celebrated a birthday in the past 10 years without also taking stock of my accomplishments. Or I should say, the lack thereof: because what starts out as a reminiscing of achievements always quickly becomes a harsh scrutiny of my insufficient yearly performance. (Are you picture Me in Glasses with Coffee Mug nagging Me in Computer Chair about TPS reports? Because I am.)

I’ve always been one to internalize everything; emotions, goals, you name it, they’re buried in there somewhere! There’s even an inkling of a competitive nature, which never revealed itself while I was playing team sports as a kid, and it took years to discover it through my own disappointment with myself. I wasn’t even aware that I had set these specific goals until their deadlines had passed, and I sat through every birthday in my twenties blowing out candles and bemoaning imaginary expiration dates.

So now, on my 29^th birthday, I’m taking inventory. Again. And this year I’m really making an effort to not let it turn into the usual blowout of negativity. The personal and professional goals I had set before Rooney was born, along with their timelines, don’t really make sense anymore. (If they ever did. Maybe I’ll share them someday, they’re pretty hilarious.)

But while being her mom comes with its own sense of achievement, it’s okay to feel compelled to do more and to be more. It’s okay to feel that disappointment in myself, but it needs to go along with a revision of plans. How can I break down my goals in a better, more manageable way so that I can accomplish them? I think for some people, myself included, both the feeling of dissatisfaction along with achievement are needed to be happy.

Playlist No. 2 – End of Summer

Is summer over? Living in Los Angeles, it never feels like it – especially when it comes to the weather. For me there is definitely a feeling of suspended animation that sets in during the last week of August and first week of September, like a weird end-of-summer blues that doesn’t subside until the autumn holiday season kicks in. (Or at least until my birthday rolls around on September 17th!)
